V-Bucks
V-Bucks are the virtual currency used in Fortnite to purchase certain digital content. They can be spent in the Item Shop, on passes, and on other offers available within the game ecosystem.
They are not legal tender and have no official cash-out exchange rate. Their availability, use, and balance are subject to Epic Games terms and platform-specific rules.
Basic facts
- Game and service: Fortnite.
- Owner and issuer: Epic Games.
- Format: virtual balance linked to an account and, in some cases, a platform.
- ISO code: none.
- Legal tender: no.
- Main use: digital content within Fortnite.
- Conversion to money: no general right to redeem for cash.
V-Bucks are not cryptocurrencies or assets traded in an open market. Epic Games controls their issuance, packages, and rules of use.
How users obtain V-Bucks
V-Bucks can be acquired through digital packages, authorized cards or Fortnite balance products, and certain official offers. They can also be earned as rewards in some products, passes, or game modes.
The source of a balance can affect where it appears and how it can be used. Epic distinguishes between purchased, bonus, and gameplay-earned V-Bucks.
What they are used for
V-Bucks can purchase content such as:
- Outfits and cosmetic items.
- Emotes.
- Accessories.
- Item bundles.
- Passes or offers made available by Epic.
Purchased items do not represent physical ownership or guarantee a resale value. The store, prices, and availability can change.
Packages and unit cost
Epic offers packages of different sizes. A larger package can include extra units or a different unit cost.
The price can also vary by:
- Country or region.
- Platform.
- Taxes.
- Promotions.
- Purchase method.
- Package-structure changes.
Cartonindex uses one specific reference and does not average incompatible packages. The comparison identifies the units, price, store, and date.
Shared Wallet and platforms
Most platforms participate in the Fortnite Shared Wallet. This feature lets certain V-Bucks be used across devices linked to the same Epic account.
There are exceptions. Epic states that V-Bucks purchased on Nintendo Switch are not shared with other platforms. Specific rules can also apply to regions or balance types.
This restriction does not change the basic Cartonindex calculation. It does show that V-Bucks are not fully transferable like a bank currency.
Gifts and cards
Directly purchased V-Bucks cannot be transferred freely between accounts. To give a balance, Epic directs users to authorized cards or products available in certain stores and regions.
Item Shop content can have separate gifting systems, but this is not the same as transferring V-Bucks between users.
How Cartonindex uses V-Bucks
The index divides the units in the reference package by its price. It then converts that price from the original currency into the selected real currency.
The configuration must preserve:
- Package name.
- Units included.
- Price.
- Currency.
- Region.
- Platform or store.
- Date.
- Included bonuses.
Available comparisons:
- Argentine peso vs. V-Bucks.
- Venezuelan bolívar vs. V-Bucks.
- Japanese yen vs. V-Bucks.
- Colombian peso vs. V-Bucks.
- Chilean peso vs. V-Bucks.
- Euro vs. V-Bucks.
Package changes and historical data
If Epic changes the amount included while keeping the same price, the cost per V-Buck changes even when exchange rates remain unchanged.
The methodology defines whether it:
- Keeps the old reference through the change date and starts a new series.
- Recalculates historical data using a comparable reference.
- Marks a methodology break.
The reference should not be replaced without disclosure.
What the equivalence does not mean
The result does not mean that V-Bucks can be sold for the displayed amount or that Epic provides a proportional refund.
It also does not represent the subjective value of a Fortnite item. It only states the acquisition cost of the selected package after conversion into another currency.
